I felt as if I was sitting across Pheby, empathizing with how difficult it must have been for her to be put in this position, but with there being no other options… This story is inspired by Mary Lumpkin and Lumpkin’s Jail in Richmond, Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This can be quite a difficult book to get through, there are quite a few graphic depictions of torture, abuse and rape that made me flinch a few times and put the book down briefly.
