About The Book

Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Brown was promised her freedom on her eighteenth birthday. But when her birthday finally comes around, instead of the idyllic life she was hoping for with her true love, she finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half-Acre, a jail where slaves are broken, tortured, and sold every day. Forced to become the mistress of the brutal man who owns the jail, Pheby faces the ultimate sacrifice to protect her heart in this powerful, thrilling story of one slave’s fight for freedom. – Goodreads

My Review: Yup, yup, yup

Another good book to add to your reading list if you like books set in this timeline. I found it so interesting and was enveloped in the storytelling that I read this within two sittings. I felt as if I was sitting across Pheby, empathizing with how difficult it must have been for her to be put in this position, but with there being no other options… This story is inspired by Mary Lumpkin and Lumpkin’s Jail in Richmond, Virginia.

Why You Should Read It

This can be quite a difficult book to get through, there are quite a few graphic depictions of torture, abuse and rape that made me flinch a few times and put the book down briefly. It’s a tough read, but a necessary one.
